CAUTION:A qualified person must be designated responsible for the overall recovery operations due to the complexities involved in aircraft removal.
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) document # 9137-AN/898, Part 5
Airport Services Manual, Part 5, “Removal of Disabled Aircraft.”
When an aircraft that must be moved cannot taxi or be towed with a standard tow bar or tug, other recovery methods must be used. If possible, the aircraft may be towed by it’s main landing gear. The aircraft may also be lifted with pneumatic bags or cranes and transported on a trailer or dollies.
Usually the removal of a disabled aircraft is beyond the capability of the airport owner. Advance planning is therefore required to ensure that the necessary equipment and skills are available when required.
Prepare a detailed “Aircraft Recovery Plan” for each airport, ready to implement as soon as an accident occurs and as soon as any required investigation permits. Formulate the necessary emergency actions and assign specific responsibilities to carry them out. Inform all major users of the airport of the airports’ management preparations and capabilities, as well as it’s policies regarding disabled aircraft removal. Applicable portions of this document is preferred t be used as part of the airport’s “Aircraft Recovery Plan”.
